Background

Hawke Optics has emerged as one of the leading manufacturers of spotting scopes in the entry level to enthusiast market.

The Endurance ED range of spotting scopes are Hawke’s top end scopes. Ranging from a compact, lightweight 50mm right up to the impressive 85mm with its 25-75x magnification.

Here we take a look at the 60mm version and for a very good reason. In our opinion it is the best value compact, lightweight spotting scope around £550. Read on to find out why.

Design

The Endurance ED 60mm spotting scope carries the same design as the other models in the Endurance ED range and is very typical of modern Hawke design.

The build quality is excellent and a significant step up over the lower priced Nature-Trek range of spotting scopes. What is most pleasing is the build quality is on par with the more expensive Hawke Endurance ED 68mm and Hawke Endurance ED 85mm.

What really stands out is just how compact and lightweight the Endurance ED 60mm is. Measuring just 300mm in length and weighing 895 grams makes it so easy to take this scope anywhere. A lightweight tripod, like the Vanguard Vesta 233AP, is more than suitable for this scope, making a great travel combination, especially with a Scopac tripod carrier

The zoom function on the Endurance ED 60mm is well weighted and makes it easy to find the right magnification throughout the zoom range of 15-45x magnification. The twist up/down eyecup works well too giving a good eye relief at all magnifications.

Focusing is a particular highlight with the dual coarse/fine system being really well damped and therefore making it easy to get the scope into focus throughout the zoom range. The fine focus is particularly excellent at higher magnifications.

Optics

Overall the Endurance ED 60mm has passed all tests thrown at it. Lets move on to the optics.

Once again Hawke have got it just right. At lower magnifications the image is bright and has excellent sharpness across the field of view with no apparent softening at the edges.

As you zoom in you do notice a slight bit of brightness drop off, as you would expect, above around 37x. However, this is not significant and is no worse than other 60mm spotting scopes of this price point.

Colours are very well represented and are very neutral, unlike a lot of scopes which enhance yellows leading to an unrealistic appearance of the subject.

Conclusion

Lets go back to our original claim that the Hawke Endurance ED 60mm is the best spotting scope for around £550.

When you look at the competition, of which there are a few options available, no other scope combines the lack of weight, compact size, excellent optics, smooth focusing system, price, and lifetime warranty of this scope.

The 65mm objectives of the likes of Viking Swallow ED and Vortex Diamondback HD may be appealing, but these are cheaper scopes and it does show in optical performance, even with the larger objective lens.

There is the ultra compact Opticron MM4 50mm. An excellent scope but with only a 50mm objective and 12-36x magnification it can’t compete with the Hawke for image brightness and maximum zoom, and is around £200 more expensive!

All in all the Hawke Endurance ED 60mm spotting scope is a sensational scope and well worth adding to your wildlife watching kit.
